The River Thames is one of England’s finest boating and recreational assets. Powered boating, canoeing, sailing, rowing, walking and angling are just a few of the activities that take place. The River User Groups were setup to provide a forum to discuss and resolve issues affecting these river activities. This website provides a way to share and communicate the debates and the decisions made in the public meetings.
The River User Groups are long established, working groups which meet about 4 times a year with the Environment Agency. Each group deals with a specific stretch of the River Thames from the source to the tideway.
The membership is open to all users including anglers, rowers, sailors, canoeists, motor boat users and walkers. The meetings are a stimulating forum for discussion, clarification and resolution of difficulties.
The RUGs really do make a difference because they bring together people with many different interests along the reaches which they cover, and know intimately. Issues are identified and solved through discussion with other groups and Environment Agency staff.
If you want to join in and contribute, please contact your local RUG initially by e-mail. The Chairman or Secretary will be delighted to tell you more about what goes on in your reaches.
The RUGs are funded by the Environment Agency, which is responsible for managing the non-tidal River Thames. The funds are used to cover the cost of the public meetings, administration and this website which has been created to help communication and consultation.
